Community Connections

some of the activities we support

Benarrawa Community Development Association

Benarrawa Community Development Association is a not-for-profit community organisation working with local people across southwest Brisbane to together create, develop and sustain positive initiatives which address issues of poverty, social and economic isolation and exclusion, loneliness, and general neighbourhood concerns. We are partnering with Benarrawa to develop a community Disaster Preparedness Plan, a local event for Refugee week and an Indigenous Cultural Walk.

Sherwood Neighbourhood Centre

Sherwood Neighbourhood Centre is a not-for-profit community organisation responds to community needs through the provision of a range of services such as information and referral, crisis support, and community education, emergency food relief and emergency housing to enable personal and social development. A variety of group activities are held at the centre to cater to the needs of the community.

Act for Peace

Act for Peace is passionate about building a better world and works across the globe to achieve safety, justice and dignity in communities threatened by conflict and natural disaster.

I wanted to say a huge personal thank you for the church’s support of the Christmas Bowl appeal in previous years. In 2015, Sherwood Uniting Church and its members donated a total of $4,190 to the Christmas Bowl, which is an absolutely incredible contribution that goes towards supporting people affected by conflict and disaster.

Scripture Union Chaplaincy

Scripture Union Chaplaincy provides spiritual and emotional support to school communities. They are in the prevention and support business: helping students find a better way to deal with issues ranging from family breakdown and loneliness, to drug abuse, depression and anxiety. They provide a listening ear and a caring presence for kids in crisis, and those who just need a friend. They also provide support for staff and parents in school communities.

Our Church supports the chaplains in our local area:

  • Corinda High
  • Corinda Primary
  • Oxley Primary
  • Darra Primary

through our prayer, financial support and the Scripture Union Chaplaincy Dinner held for the first time in 2016.

Sherwood Street Festival

Sherwood Street Festival is held each November and is a celebration of our community with a night of family fun. Our Church has been involved in the festival for over 20 years, providing displays, activities, food, free tea and damper.

This year we will be hosting an Art Exhibition in the week prior to the Festival organised by the Chapel Gardens Art group and Brush Stroke Friends.

Sherwood State School

The Ready Reader program works with individual students to help them gain confidence with their reading and become independent readers.

Volunteers from our Congregation support students from our local school and assist with improving their fluency and comprehension.
